on the numbers is michael mcnamara of mastercard advisers. great to have you with us. many analysts, retailers had high hopes for the season. i think it's looking weaker than expected. of course we had hurricane sandy and we're dealing with the fiscal cliff, as well. what do you think the big driver was of these slower growth numbers? >> well, good morning. yes, you hit on two of the big ones. really the season tripped coming out of the starting gate with hurricane sandy. the impact in the northeast and mid-atlantic, both those regions of the country actually had negative holiday seasons for the holiday-related sectors that we track. other areas of the country that were not impacted by significant weather in the southeast, south central, mountain and west, were up 2% to 4% year over year. so really depended on where you were in the country, how but during the holiday season. >> okay. that's definitely interesting to look at, the regional breakdown. i also want to talk about promotions. every year we see the promotions start, it seems, earlier, and discounts are a little deeper. at the end of t

, there is going to be two deals. i want to ask mr. santelli if i can, michael, as far as all the time you've been covering the markets we've basically been on hold for a month here. a full month of december we've been on hold. i believe we'll be on hold for most of the month of january. you take that, two months out of 12, that is 16% of the year. a bunch of these corporations are not going to like that we don't have certainty about the debt ceiling and that negotiations the one that is more troubling to me than this one. how about for you? >> i agree with that. basically, i've been surprised by the level of a parent kind of corporate hesitancy about their actual business given what is going on in washington. i don't really think that the tangible stakes are that high for most businesses. it just happens to be this overhang. so i do think that is a major concern and really i think that -- >> you can paint it another way. >> hold it. both you guys said that the debt ceiling is a major concern for corporations. >> yep. >> tell me why that is. i'm on the other side of the fence. i don't agree with t

the details. michael described it as it's not a palemic and i think audiences smell propaganda but if you can introduce the complexity of what they do. "24" was not about a good choice and bad choice but the better of two bad choices. if there was a formula of "24" that would have been it. and i think these people saw and president obama sees as well there is something about the presentation of the complexity of some of the things that people who are charged with these jobs have to deal with. writing it and imagining it makes me glad it's not my job just imagining how tough some of these decisions must be makes you grateful. >> the verse that we show in frost nixon "the queen" and that is how much responsibility you take with that, especially when art itself is working in metaphors. when people ask me about there is a pivot al scene in "frost nixon" which never happened. how could you show that because that is a pivotal moment in the piece. and the same with "the queen," that never happened. nixon did used to make phone calls and a part of his research would be times he was on heavy medicatio

i deplore the ground that is going to accomplish michael? it is all the question -- "i can deploy on the ground that is my goal? accomplish michael i think it is about this balance of having clear, realistic goals for the amount of resources you're willing to commit with. you brought up isr and border security. these are things that are extremely expensive to field. isr is great. the question is, what kind of isr do you want? isr you want is people on the ground you can trust with a cellphone were calling and telling you what is going on in the countryside. it is about as realistic planning. that is a great thing about africom. if it does the training exercises and it does the capacity building that they know how to do, they're going to provide -- they're going to help africans provide realistic solutions. heritage was the first foundation to make a credible argument for establishing africom. we want to facilitate solutions within those countries so united states does not get drawn in. if we let africom do its job, we can create sustainable solutions. i really believe that. >> can

"the endgame" is the most recent book. if you could summarize for us? >> it took three years. the first comprehensive history of the war in iraq and what makes it unique is i incorporate not only american policymakers but all the iraqi leadership from mr. maliki, president talibany, rivals and enemies supply inc. the iraqi account of what was going on and be accountable was happening on the battlefield. i covered the war in iraq for the new york times for the whole conflict. >> why did you call it "the endgame"? >> i covered the surge and is the end game of american military conflict and the last part of the book covers the obama administration. it has not been well covered by the media in terms of what the policy was in iraq. i learned a lot doing it. during the campaign president obama talked a lot about the goals that ended the war in iraq and took out the troops. what i discovered in doing the book is the administration's own policy objectives in iraq, narrowed objectives went far beyond taking out the troops. extended to rem

than any time than in the past 15 years. mayor michael bloomberg said there were just over 400 homicides in 2012, 100 less than in the previous year. one man knows a lot about that subject, new york city's deputy police commissioner, paul brown who joins us live right now. mr. brown, congratulations. how have you done it? >> thank you mainly through 35,000 men and women in uniform but particularly through something called operation at attack where we send as many uniformed police officers as possible into areas where we have seen spikes and violence particularly shootings. >> that sounds almost like a back to basics campaign. why was the decision taken to go in that direction? >> well, it started with mayor bloomberg and commissioner kelly coming into the office right after 9/11 with a deep downturn in the economy, less tax revenue. we lost 6000 police officers through attrition, we have 6000 fewer now than we had then. that forced us to take a look at how we deploy officers into the city. instead of dividing them up as we usually did into 76 precincts, we focused better on def
